Dear Support,

How can I mark all repositories ‘private’?

And is there a way that every new repository, by default, marked as private?

You can set defaults for repositories under admin > defaults (mark private checkbox)
There’s no easy way to mark all repositories as private unfortunetly, you’d have to manually do this.

I am wondering, if the API has something that could aid the ‘mark all existing repos private’ task?
